The K-Beauty 10-Step Routine: What You Actually Need (And What You Can Skip)

You've heard about the famous Korean 10-step skincare routine. Maybe it sounds exciting. Maybe it sounds exhausting. Probably both.

Here's the truth: you don't need 10 steps. The 10-step routine is a framework — a menu of options — not a prescription you have to follow to the letter. The beauty of K-beauty is that you take what works for your skin and leave the rest.

In this guide, we'll break down every step, explain what it actually does, and help you figure out which ones are worth adding to your routine right now.

The Full 10-Step K-Beauty Routine (Explained)

Step 1: Oil Cleanser

What it does: Dissolves sunscreen, makeup and sebum — the oil-based impurities that a regular cleanser can't fully remove.

Do you need it? If you wear SPF (and you should — more on that later), yes. An oil cleanser is the first step in double cleansing, which is one of the most important concepts in K-beauty. Apply to dry skin, massage gently, then rinse.

Skip it if: You wear no makeup and no sunscreen. But honestly — that's rare.

Step 2: Water-Based Cleanser

What it does: Removes any remaining impurities, sweat and water-based debris after the oil cleanser.

Do you need it? Yes — this is non-negotiable. A gentle, low-pH cleanser is the foundation of any good skincare routine. It sets your skin up to absorb everything that comes after.

What to look for: Foam or gel cleansers that don't leave your skin feeling tight or squeaky. If it feels stripped, it's too harsh.

Step 3: Exfoliator

What it does: Removes dead skin cells to improve texture, brightness and product absorption. Can be physical (scrub) or chemical (AHA/BHA acids).

Do you need it? 2–3 times a week maximum — never daily. Over-exfoliating is one of the most common skincare mistakes.

K-beauty picks: The Some By Mi AHA BHA PHA 30 Days Miracle range is a cult favourite for gentle but effective exfoliation. Perfect for congested, acne-prone or dull skin.

Skip it if: Your skin is very sensitive or currently irritated.

Step 4: Toner

What it does: In K-beauty, toners are nothing like the harsh, alcohol-based astringents of the past. Korean toners are hydrating, pH-balancing and prep your skin to absorb serums more effectively.

Do you need it? Yes — this is one of the most underrated steps. A good hydrating toner adds a layer of moisture and makes everything applied after it work harder.

What to look for: Lightweight, watery formulas with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, centella asiatica or green tea. Avoid anything with alcohol high on the ingredient list.

Step 5: Essence

What it does: The heart of K-beauty. Essences are lightweight, concentrated treatments that deliver active ingredients deep into the skin. They sit between a toner and a serum in terms of consistency.

Do you need it? This is where K-beauty really shines. The COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence is one of the most beloved skincare products ever made — deeply hydrating, repairing and brightening all at once.

Skip it if: You're keeping your routine minimal. A good serum can do much of the same work.

Step 6: Serum or Ampoule

What it does: Serums are concentrated treatments that target specific skin concerns — hydration, brightening, firming, acne, pigmentation. Ampoules are even more concentrated, used for short-term intensive treatment.

Do you need it? Absolutely. This is where you choose products based on your specific skin goals.

  • For firming and anti-ageing: Try the CENTELLIAN24 Lifting Peptide Serum or Belif Super Drops Peptide Firming Serum
  • For hydration: The COSRX The 6 Peptide Skin Booster Serum or Innisfree Green Tea Seed Hyaluronic Serum
  • For acne and blemishes: The Some By Mi AHA BHA PHA 30 Days Miracle Serum

Step 7: Sheet Mask

What it does: Delivers an intensive burst of hydration and treatment ingredients. Think of it as a supercharged serum session.

Do you need it? Not every day — but a few times a week is a lovely addition to your routine. The COSRX Advanced Snail Mucin Hydrogel Mask is a firm favourite for deeply nourishing skin.

Skip it if: You're short on time. Sheet masks are more of a treat than a necessity.

Step 8: Eye Cream

What it does: The skin around your eyes is the thinnest on your face and shows signs of ageing first. Eye creams target fine lines, puffiness and dark circles.

Do you need it? It depends on your age and concerns. If you're in your late 20s or older and notice fine lines forming, it's worth adding. Apply with your ring finger — never tug.

Step 9: Moisturiser

What it does: Seals in all the hydration and active ingredients you've layered underneath. Also strengthens your skin barrier.

Do you need it? Yes — always. Even oily skin needs moisturiser. The key is finding the right texture for your skin type: lightweight gel for oily skin, richer cream for dry or mature skin.

Step 10: SPF (Morning Only)

What it does: Protects your skin from UV damage — the number one cause of premature ageing, pigmentation and skin cancer.

Do you need it? This is the most important step of your entire routine. In Australia especially, SPF50+ every single morning is non-negotiable — whether you're going to the beach or sitting by a window at home.

K-beauty SPF is genuinely different. Lightweight, invisible and comfortable to wear, Korean sunscreens have converted even the most SPF-resistant people. The Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun range is our most loved SPF at Serei Beauty — and for good reason.

So What Routine Should You Actually Do?

Here's our recommended starter K-beauty routine — effective, simple and easy to maintain:

Morning (5 steps):

  1. Gentle water-based cleanser
  2. Hydrating toner
  3. Serum (targeted to your skin concern)
  4. Moisturiser
  5. SPF50+

Evening (4–5 steps):

  1. Oil cleanser (if wearing SPF/makeup)
  2. Water-based cleanser
  3. Toner
  4. Serum or essence
  5. Moisturiser

Once this feels like second nature, you can start adding in extras — an eye cream here, a sheet mask there. Build gradually and your skin will thank you.

The Golden Rules of K-Beauty Layering

Lightest to heaviest — always apply products from the thinnest consistency to the thickest. Toner → essence → serum → moisturiser → SPF.

Pat, don't rub — gently patting products into your skin (rather than rubbing) improves absorption and is kinder to your skin barrier.

Wait between layers — give each product 30–60 seconds to absorb before applying the next. This improves efficacy significantly.

Less is more — a pea-sized amount of serum is usually enough. More product doesn't always mean better results.
